Publisher's Summary

“The engagement between them is of a peculiar kind. From their infancy, they have been intended for each other. It was the favorite wish of his mother.…” (Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice)

Fitzwilliam Darcy was raised to never stray from the path set before him: Ensure the continued prosperity of his estate, Pemberley, protect and educate his sister to become an accomplished woman, and marry the woman his mother chose for him — his cousin Anne de Bourgh. With a letter bearing his late mother’s signature, Darcy presumes his fate is sealed and prepares to wed one he does not love. However, his destiny begins to unravel when he glimpses a pair of fine eyes on a quiet, country road.

Elizabeth Bennet is the second daughter of a respectable, though insignificant gentleman. She is flattered to have captured the attention of a local squire, a childhood friend, and everyone believes her path is secure — until a handsome, rich gentleman arrives at a neighboring estate. Happenstance begets the unlikely pair together, bridging a forbidden love long past a mere friendship.

In A Lie Universally Hidden, two of literature’s most beloved romance characters are destined to marry for fortune and obligation rather than love. How will Darcy and Elizabeth fulfill their true destiny under such circumstances? Shall honor, decorum, prudence — nay, a signed letter from the grave — forbid it?

A Lie Universally Hidden is a Regency Romance suitable for most audiences, teen and up.

Heartstopping Race to the Finish!!

Right till the last did I despair that the lie at the heart of this novel would be uncovered! Entertaining and joyful, this alternative story to Jane Austen's Regency novel Pride and Prejudice features plenty of action scenes and lots of affection. Indeed, this Darcy was not quite so foreboding! His sister Georgiana has more speech than expected, rounding out her character neatly. Narration is clear and flows well. Really enjoyed listening to Anngela Schroeder's new book. If you're an avid Austenesque reader, so will you!

Lovely

Very well written and enjoyable story. Due to his aunt Catherine's scheming, Darcy believes it was his mother's dying wish that he marry his cousin Anne. And he is resolved to do just that despite his antipathy towards Anne and his growing feelings for Elizabeth. Elizabeth also has another suitor, whom, it has always been assumed she would marry. Misunderstandings inhibit Elizabeth and Darcy realising their true feelings for each other, and the suspense builds until the truth is finally revealed and all set to rights. Anne is not left out but has her own happy ending too. It did feel like the story finished a little quickly after the resolution, but other than that, it was true to Austin in style and tone, and a lovely diversion from less pleasant aspects of the current world affairs.

5 stars! Perfection!

Brilliant narration, fantastic story, plenty of romance and angst. This book had everything you’d want and it’s definitely one of the best P&P variations I’ve ever come across. I love the way the author wove the original dialogue into different parts of the story and used it for different characters, yet the writing felt true to the spirit of the original. Darcy and Elizabeth are portrayed to perfection and I really enjoyed Kitty’s character development. The narrator truly did the story justice. Loved it!

Really not sure about the narrator

The story was satisfying and enjoyable. Not one I am likely to treasure or read again but also not one that was awful. The ending, tied everything up nicely. Great read for a rainy day.

The narrator was new to me and although her voice had a pleasant tone, the story was a little hard to follow through places where characters talked a lot because her character voices were all very similar and inconsistent. For example, at the very beginning lady Catherine sounded nice and then towards the end she sounded more snivelling. These inconsistencies also happened with Mrs Bennet, Anne, Georgiana and even Elizabeth. Also all the men had the same tone and so was very hard to know who was speaking when all were in conversation together. I highly suggest she work on different voices and get comfortable with them so it’s easier to distinguish between the characters in talking scenes. The other slightly annoying thing she did was the was she always pronounce her G’s. They were very hard and prominent and it sounded very unpleasant.
