Slow and Sensual

Lovely, well written emotional mystery/drama with sensual detail without being pornography. The regency period written the right way. The narrator is excellent. Vocal characterizations with distinctive expertize.

Smooth and Entertaining

This novel was just that novel and suprising. It kept you listening through the whole story not able to anticipate the changes in teh plot (which I generally do with ease). I loved it.

Lovers and murder and diplomats, oh my

bastion-club, reread, traitor, treason, murder, historical-romance, england

A Bastion Club novel, and all of them are good and each is different.
Another romance novel, one where a misunderstanding years ago left each of them mistrusting the other (separated for many years until after Waterloo), but this one does have a real plot to keep you interested long after the gratuitous erotica has you yawning.
Aside from the romance aspect, there are murders, traitorous activites found out, help from fellow ex spies, and a lot of speculation and action throughout. No spoilers. Just enjoy it.
Jill Tanner does a pretty good job with this one.

It was alright

I love Stephanie Laurens and her Bastion Club novels but this one just dragged on i thought. did not hold my interest at times i just turned it off and came back to it later. no real "romance" and to me the plot was so-so. just not my cup of tea on this one

BORRRRRING!

Ms. Laurens just needed to get on with the story between Penelope and Charles. There was way too much of self thought and introspection. It drug on and on and on. Of course Jill Tanner isn't the best narrator either and perhaps this book would have been better had a different narrator read the story. I can't really recommend this book. I just thought it would never end.

These Bastion Club novels are all the same...

Any additional comments?

All Bastion Club novels were written using the same template... Once you listened to one of them, you listened to all. Too much sex, for my taste. All the men are tall, dark and handsome; all the heroines are so not into marriage... Yes, I do listen to romance novels to escape, but these are so unbelievable and unconvincing... Jill Tanner is a wonderful narrator and I love her voice, but even she cannot save this pseudo-literature.

second chance at love

Date: 1816 April Chronology: set after A Gentleman’s Honor, before To Distraction. Charles escapes to his country home to find the love of his youth staying there and in the throes of a mystery. Yeah, Tanner is still reading with a stick you know where and many many mispronunciations that are not just a Brit version of the words.

Too long

this book could have been condensed. It dragged on and the villian was obvious from the get go.

British pronunciation tiresome

What small portion of the book is devoted to action and plot is interesting but all the bedroom scenes put me to sleep. And this author used the word "grimace" way too often. Add to that the readers pronounce it as 'grim aces' - sounds like a bad poker hand. If you are looking for an easy listen to lull you to an easy nap this is the story for you.

The Hero is a Smart Arse.

I can't see what was appealing in his character. After her previous experience with him it is amazing she tolerated his presence. I fear though the story, sounded good. However, I really couldn't swallow his arrogant, bullying and patronising manner. The heroine original portrait as a strong managing woman, turns out to be a wet blanket. Just willing to be used, pushed around and walked over. All in the name of love. Also for a single woman , to let it be known, she has a lover, would be ruinous. As servants always gossip. Even the gratuitous sex, falls into the background with such an obnoxious Hero.

Delicious

Great book. Long but not boring. The Bastion Club, in my opinion, is better then The Cynstets.
