Two couples, four ironclad friendships, the perfect coastal holiday town. With salt-stung houses perched like lifeguards overlooking the shore, Lago Point is the scene of postcards, not crime scenes. Story
The teenage girl was the first victim. Her throat cut to the bone, she didn’t stand a chance. Her mother, at least, had time to fight back. Briefly. Called to the crime scene in leafy Wimbledon, Maeve Kerrigan’s first thought is that this is a domestic dispute gone badly. But the husband is found lying bleeding and unconscious in an upstairs room. As a criminal barrister he insists he’s the third victim rather than their prime suspect, even if he’s a man who makes enemies easily. The only other surviving family member is 15-year-old Lydia....

Publisher's Summary
Ruth Hartland is the director of a trauma unit, a psychotherapist with years of experience, wise and respected by her peers. But professional skill is no guard against private grief.
The mother of grown twins, she is haunted by the fact that her beautiful, difficult, fragile son Tom, a boy who never 'fit in', disappeared a year and a half earlier. She cannot give up hope of finding him but feels she is living a kind of half life, waiting for him to return.

Fell flat
Kept my interest all the way through. Unfortunately fell flat on its face at the end. Maybe if the character development had been deeper and I could have really felt for them, it would have evoked more emotion. Didn’t happen. Just felt like a huge waste of time.

Gripping but intense
A therapist friend recommended this book so I believe it was authentic. I found hearing about the work of a therapist hard to imagine and wonder how anyone can deal with others’ traumatic experiences. Overall a very good read.

Outstanding
Books like this one come along perhaps once or twice a year that is books that totally grip you to the point you cannot stop listening. I understand that the author is a psychologist and this was demonstrated in the detail she put into the story referencing psychological theories to give substance to the story which is essentially about what happens when the therapeutic relationship goes horribly wrong. It might sound dry but in actual fact, it's a gripping thriller well told with fantastic characters. The excellent narration just made it even better. This rates as one of my favorite books.

I just couldn't get into this ...
It's possibly a really good book but I just couldn't warm to the central character, or care about any of the other characters. Maybe I've read too many books about lost sons in recent months.. (why does no-one write about lost daughters?) but I started to struggle with this book and eventually abandoned it. The storyline felt inevitable - but because I didn't read it all, I may have missed some interesting twists. It's a great premise for a story and the author writes well, so you might enjoy this much more than I did.

Great story. Well-read
Rebecca Lacey is an excellent narrator but her only fault is that she pronounces “perhaps” as “prehaps” and unfortunately the book seems to contain the word perhaps more than any other I’ve read! So it does get a bit irritating

A compelling listen
As a seasoned mental health professional I often find subjects like this wearisome and inauthentic. Bev Thomas tells a gripping tale, both tense and moving, with deft portrayal of the ambiguities, nuances and human factors faced in these professions where the personal can forcefully collide with the professional. Am already enthusiastically recommendeding it to everyone!
