About this listen

The river remembers. And it’s not finished yet.

Four years ago, Oxford rower Hannah Emmerson vanished while running along the River Isis. No witnesses. No body. Just unanswered questions that refused to stay buried.

After a devastating storm floods the city, the river finally gives up its secret.

When Hannah’s body is discovered in a freak narrowboat accident, DI Joseph Stone is pulled back into a case many hoped was over. But the past isn’t done with Oxford yet. As the investigation deepens, another woman from the rowing team is targeted—and it becomes chillingly clear that Hannah was only the beginning.

With pressure mounting and a new victim abducted while under police protection, Joseph and DC Megan Anderson are forced into a race against time. The answers lie somewhere along the river’s twisting course—but uncovering them may come at a terrible cost.

Narrated by Patrick FitzSymons, A Flood of Sorrow is a dark, atmospheric British crime thriller set against the rain-soaked streets and waterways of Oxford. Tense, immersive, and driven by quiet menace, it’s the gripping second instalment in the DI Joseph Stone series.

Ideal for listeners who enjoy slow-burning investigations, relentless suspense, and crimes shaped by place as much as motive.

The central characters in this series are really starting to get interesting. The story of murder has enough twists and false leads to make good listening but it’s the interplay of the personal and professional characters involved that makes this a good listen. Looking forward to the next one! Very good narration.

A promising series
