For sale: historic building in the picturesque town of Montenello, southern Italy.

Asking price: 1 Euro.

Cloudless skies, sun-soaked countryside, delicious food...

In the drowsy heat of an Italian summer, four strangers arrive in a beautiful town nestled in the mountains of Basilicata, dreaming of a new adventure. An innovative scheme by the town's Mayor has given them the chance to buy a crumbling historic building for a single euro - on the condition that they renovate their home within three years and help to bring new life to the close-knit local community.

Elise is desperate to get on the property ladder. Edward wants to escape a life he feels suffocated by. Mimi is determined to start afresh after her divorce. And there's one new arrival whose true motives are yet to be revealed....

For each of them, Montenello offers a different promise of happiness. But can they turn their dream of Italy into reality?

A deliciously escapist summer listen, perfect for fans of Jo Thomas.

A dream of Italy

I loved this book. Having been to Italy for a trip this book brought back all my memories of the quiet little villages we stayed in.... The narrator was clear and had warmth in her voice. I liked the theme of buying a house for $1 euro as this would be my dream.

Australian accents

I really enjoyed this gently listen but really the Australian accents are appalling. Please get an Australian to narrate them as very few of us sound like we have lived in the outback all our lives.

Charming! Exactly the kind of book I was looking for

My favorite book has a bit of history a bit of fiction people stories and is believable and well written. I love this book. I love the characters. I love architecture art and things of beauty. This book respects those things. A great read. I was stuck in terrible traffic for hours and I didn’t mind a bit!

Sweet and with depth

The story was enchanting with descriptive language so lovely I could picture the endearing little town with ease. Characters and storylines were woven together smoothly and with just enough drama to keep it real. A delightful read.

Light and enjoyable.

This was light and enjoyable. Love the references to simple italian meals and recipes. Easy to listen to. Wish it could have been longer I wasn’t ready for it to end.

Hard to get into because it spent so much time on set up.

Got better when it shifted to Italy. Characters for the most part struggled to come alive. If you like Hallmark movies you will probably like this.

A big step below Under the Tuscan Sun - so if you haven’t read that, read it first.

I would love to read an actual account of folks who took on the free houses by someone like Tracy Kidder with all his glorious detail and insights.

Nice easy listening 'Escape'

Perfect easy-listening, undemanding read. It was easy to imagine and escape to one of those pretty, ancient hill top towns you see in Italy, and the descriptions were evocative.. The story was pleasant and enjoyable and beautifully performed.

Dull narrating!

The storyline was pleasant enough but to many characters for the length of the book.
The narrator I found dull, with every character sounding the same apart from the 2 accents.
I may attempt one more from this author as I love everything Italian. But I think I’d be more likely to read the next one!

Interesting story

Really enjoyed the story but felt that the ending was a bit rushed and could have been expanded more. As always Nicky Pelligrino’s work is enjoyable.

Not exiting

Story was a bit plain, basic. It did not kept me interested or looking forward to go back to finish the book.
I didn't like the narrator either.

Just love this narrator + Pellegrino's books.

I always feel like I'm away in a foreign country, relaxing and in heaven when I listen to McDowell reading Pellegrino's books. A holiday every time I read ❤️ thank you both

I loved this book. A town in Italy that is falling apart, a mayor who wants to bring in new people. A group of people from all different walks of life whose stories unfold. I loved all the characters and it is a heartwarming story.

Another fantastic read from Nicky Pellegrino.

An intriguing story bought to life by Jane McDowell. Interesting, believable characters, I just wish I could see an ad like that!
