About this listen

Audiobook narrated by Jacinda Ardern.

What if we could redefine leadership? What if kindness came first? Jacinda Ardern grew up the daughter of a police officer in small-town New Zealand, but as the 40th Prime Minister of her country, she commanded global respect for her empathetic leadership that put people first. This is the remarkable story of how a Mormon girl plagued by self-doubt made political history and changed our assumptions of what a global leader can be.

When Jacinda Ardern became Prime Minister at age thirty-seven, the world took notice. But it was her compassionate yet powerful response to the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks, resulting in swift and sweeping gun control laws, that demonstrated her remarkable leadership. She guided her country through unprecedented challenges-a volcanic eruption, a major biosecurity incursion, and a global pandemic-while advancing visionary new polices to address climate change, reduce child poverty, and secure historic international trade deals. She did all this while juggling first-time motherhood in the public eye.

Ardern exemplifies a new kind of leadership-proving that leaders can be caring, empathetic, and effective. She has become a global icon, and now she is ready to share her story, from the struggles to the surprises, including for the first time the full details of her decision to step down during her sixth year as Prime Minister.

Through her personal experiences and reflections, Jacinda is a model for anyone who has ever doubted themselves, or has aspired to lead with compassion, conviction, and courage. A Different Kind of Power is more than a political memoir; it's an insight into how it feels to lead, ultimately asking: What if you, too, are capable of more than you ever imagined?©2025 Jacinda Ardern (P)2025 Penguin Random House New Zealand Audio

Could not put it down

I listened as fast as I could, sneaking an earbud in at work when I definitely should not have been. I loved this book. I was already a big fan but I’m even more so now. Thank you for writing this and for being you Jacinda. You did an incredible job as PM and at writing your book

A beacon of hope for a different kind of future

Authentic. Vulnerable. Kind. When sometimes the bravest thing to do is to stop. Shining light in all the right places.

Kindness written well

A great insight into Jacinda Arden that is very easy to red/listen to. She didn’t go too deep but gave enough to understand her tenacity, passion and kindness. I really enjoyed this read and I now I really like her too. Her leadership was phenomenal and I hope this inspires other young leaders and older, to take her view on. The world would be a better kinder place.

Her kindness and authenticity

As a NZlander - I’m proud of having Jacinda Ardern as a PM. Her kindness vibrated not just in NZ but all over the world and she changed the way leadership is seen. That politicians are also relatable, human and also deserve our kindness. Her memoir showed this throughout and I thought that not many former world leaders are willing to show that kind of vulnerability. As someone who also suffers from Imposter Syndrome, I’m glad that she touched on this because we put so much pressure not just on ourselves but everyone else to be perfect and know all the answers, when really…we are all trying to figure things out together. She pointed that out numerous times in this memoir and its refreshing to see how she owns her ups and downs and learns from them. I highly recommend this book!

True leadership

Excellent story revealing what is most senses is an ordinary life that could be any of us. The distinguishing characteristic is the leadership skill in its truest sense. One who others choose to follow is a true leader.

Truely is a different kind of power

I loved every minute of this book and it came alive with Jacinda reading. Whatever you think of her politics all of that is secondary to the remarkableness of this human being. In the current state of the world epitomised by the crassness of the Bezos wedding and the circus that is Trump - time spent with this humble, kind and thoughtful woman is soothing, funny, love, family and strength. Read it.
