Publisher's Summary

Four high-school students in present-day New Orleans are torn apart by envy, passion, and tragedy.

Meredith, Brandon, Greg, and Stephen quickly discover the fragile boundaries between friendship and betrayal as they enter high school and form new alliances. Brandon and Greg gain popularity as football jocks, and Meredith joins the bulimic in-crowd, while Stephen becomes the target of homophobia in a school that viciously mocks him. Then, two violent deaths disrupt the core of what they once shared.

Five years later, the friends are drawn back together as new facts about their mutual history are revealed, and what was held to be a tragic accident is discovered to be murder. As the true story emerges, other secrets begin to unravel and the casual cruelties of high school develop into acts of violence that threaten an entire city.

A Density of Souls is a stunning debut novel that lays bare the darker side of the teenage experience in modern-day America.

My favorite of Rice's books

I've listened to 4 out of the 5 books Christopher Rice has written and while they are all good this is, by far, my favorite. As with most of Rice's books the beginning was a bit confusing but still grabbed my interest from the first chapter.

Stephen was a very compelling protagonist for me and I was saddened when I realized that the story was drawing towards a conclusion. This is a book I will listen to again and again I'm sure. A terrific first outing for someone who has become one of my very favorite writers.

Not bad

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is not my usual genre, but the characters captured my interest. Mr. Rice's writing style took an hour or so to become accustomed to, but it was worth the adjustment. I am an "hour" snob (I love 30 hour reads) so at less than 10 hours the book seemed very short. My only complaint is that he could have expanded the story. I found myself wanting to know more...more about the characters, more about the back story, more about everything.

Unexpected

This is my second Audiobook and i definitely enjoyed it. The beginning seemed a little confusing, but it got better. I honestly cried at some parts while listening. The end is very unexpected. You will not be disappointed.

waiting

I kept waiting and waiting for something positive or good to happen. I finished the whole book still waiting. It started out depressing and it got worse and worse as it spiraled down and down. I can't recommend this book.

Disappointing from a favorite author

I couldn't finish this book. The performance was lackluster with confusing accents (New York in cajun country?), and I don't care about any of the characters. They seem to deserve their misery. The story itself was okay, but the result did nothing for me.

Help me survive my teens best of all time!

I can’t even explain the emotions this book brought out of me when I was younger! I felt like I was Christopher! So much happens in a short period of time! The pros are truly remarkable! I would re read this book over & over W/ circa survive playing in the background & just cry! My book was so highlighted and worn because when I was sad I would just open it up and it’s like god would point me to the place I needed to read! This novel has EVERYTHING & if ur gay even straight, but for sure gay & have never read this book!! Please do yourself a favor! If u have a teen son who is gay! Get them this audible or book! It will help them in ways u will never understand! If u r older remember how u felt in those high school days! Especially with a boy who was straight! That u couldn’t have! I just could never thank the author enough for this novel! And all the ppl he has touched w/ it! And that last page will send a shock thru ur body like nothing has before! I read all the time & I have still never read a last page that has come close to the ending of this book! You will NEVER get it out of ur head! & it would really make u wonder what u would do in that situation!

A walk back in time.

Christopher has captured both the darkness and illumination of growing up gay in such a heart wrenching and realistic way that I was forced to confront my demons. through his words and the narrator 's interpretation, I was transported to my own tortured yourh growing up on the Florida keys.
thank.you. your talent with the English language painted such a beautiful portrait if NOLA's Garden district. I could see myself walking the streets and feel myself panicking in the storm. this was my first time listening to the book and third time being enveloped by the Densiry of Souls.

a good listen

although I found his writting style initially challenging in the end it was overall enjoyable. it is very different from his mothers and uniquely his own. the story was good with unexpected twists though I felt it jumped around a bit more than I tend to like. I was left wanting more information in the end however a can't honestly say that is a negative. definitely a good choice if your looking for a unique style of writting, overall story line was captivating. perhaps I'm underrating but being left wanting more and unaccustomed to the style gives it 4 stars all the way around.

A wonderful story told with such passion.

I was immediately drawn into the story by James Daniels' soulful performance. This was my first time with a book by Christopher Rice. I must admit he has a unique style and managed to intrigue me with his beautiful words. I will definitely look out for more books by Christopher Rice!

A beautifully crafted first novel!

A Density of Souls bring to life the, all too real, problems of gay youth. Stephen is set adrift in the bewildering and traumatic sea of a new school after the wreck of his former friendship with Meredith, Gregg and Brandon. The frequent backstory flashes help to bring a deeper understanding of whence these complex characters evolved. Meredith, torn between Stephen and Gregg, finds solace in vodka and writing her journal; Gregg, troubled by his attraction to Stephen and his need to conform, sides with Brandon whilst courting Meredith; Brandon is the ever present dark malice that overshadows all of them and leads to wonton violence and mass murder.
A mixture of warm, tender moments and desolate periods punctuate this beautifully craft first novel by Christopher Rice and I found it easy to build mental images for the main characters and locations depicted. I await with eager anticipation further offerings of Christopher's books on Audible.
I am 2 1/2 hours into my third listening of this book in 7 days and have no hesitation in recommending it.
