About this listen

This fascinating history tells the story of the people of Japan, from ancient teenage priest-queens to teeming hordes of salarymen, a nation that once sought to conquer China, yet also shut itself away for two centuries in self-imposed seclusion.

First revealed to Westerners in the chronicles of Marco Polo, Japan was a legendary faraway land defended by a fearsome Kamikaze storm and ruled by a divine sovereign. It was the terminus of the Silk Road, the furthest end of the known world, a fertile source of inspiration for European artists, and an enduring symbol of the mysterious East. In recent times, it has become a powerhouse of global industry, a nexus of popular culture, and a harbinger of post-industrial decline.

With intelligence and wit, author Jonathan Clements blends documentary and storytelling styles to connect the past, present, and future of Japan, and in broad yet detailed strokes reveals a country of paradoxes: a modern nation steeped in ancient traditions; a democracy with an emperor as head of state; a famously safe society built on 108 volcanoes resting on the world's most active earthquake zone; a fast-paced urban and technologically advanced country whose land consists predominantly of mountains and forests.

As the title promises, an informative compacted story that doesn’t get bogged down in boring stuff

Very well written and narrated. Insightful, objective (and occasionally amusingly wry and witty) observations about Japan and the Japanese, from ancient to modern. Highly recommended.

Very good. Yoi Hon

There is so much that I didn’t know about Japanese history and this documentation has gone a long way into remedying that. WOW! I certainly wouldn’t have liked to have lived there in the early days which seem to be worse than the early years of UK history and that was bad enough. I would never have found the time to read an historical account of this country and therefore am so grateful knowing that I can listen to audiobooks as a viable choice. I recommend this writing to anyone of the same mind. After all, one can continue with mundane tasks which are brightened up by listening to great presentations.

I have been enlightened.

Broad strokes of Japanese history with frequent stories or examples which demonstrate the theme of that time. I found myself wanting more which is exactly the point of a "brief" history

Didn't really get a feel for the Japanese people at he beginning of the book (relying on historical texts of the ruling classes) but as the book progressed into the modern era he developed his insights into the general population.

Improves as the book develops

An objective overview of Japan’s history giving equal weight to each time period while drawing attention to recurrent themes that continue to influence Japanese culture to the present day. I found it a useful resource in preparing for a visit to Japan as a way to demystify some of the apparent contrasts with Western culture. The narration bears a slightly ironic tone that is a refreshing departure from other books on the subject, informed yet not overly fawning or promotional.

Informative, frank and well-narrated

Five chapters in and I’ve given up on this. Detailed retelling of ancient legends and not a date or fact to be heard. If it wasn’t for the ongoing reference to the Chinese dynasties I’d be even more lost. Might get better,
