Story
It all begins on a Monday, when four people board an elevator in a Manhattan office tower. Each presses a button for their floor, but the elevator proceeds, nonstop, to the top. Once there, it stops for a few seconds, and then plummets. Right to the bottom of the shaft. It appears to be a horrific, random tragedy. But then, on Tuesday, it happens again, in a different skyscraper. And when Wednesday brings yet another high-rise catastrophe, one of the most vertical cities in the world - and the nation’s capital of media, finance and entertainment - is plunged into chaos.

The love of Alice's life had proposed, they were proud new homeowners, and she'd just landed a great promotion at work. Things were going to plan. Well, they were, until the Red Death struck. Billions dead in a matter of weeks. The survivors are few and far between. No one is safe. Life will never be the same again.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Mary Robinette Kowal continues the grand sweep of alternate history begun in The Calculating Stars. The Fated Sky looks forward to 1961, when mankind is well established on the moon and looking forward to its next step: journeying to, and eventually colonizing, Mars. Of course the noted Lady Astronaut Elma York would like to go, but there’s a lot riding on whoever the International Aerospace Coalition decides to send on this historic - but potentially very dangerous - mission. Could Elma really leave behind her husband and the chance to start a family to spend several years traveling to Mars?

Story
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

Nobody can destroy the world like John Birmingham

Publisher's Summary
My name's Griz. I've never been to school, I've never had friends, in my whole life I've not met enough people to play a game of football. My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, before all the people went away, but we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other, and our dogs.
Then the thief came.
He told stories of the deserted towns and cities beyond our horizons. I liked him - until I woke to find he had stolen my dog. So I chased him out into the ruins of the world.
I just want to get my dog back, but I found more than I ever imagined was possible. More about how the world ended. More about what my family's real story is. More about what really matters.
A Boy and his Dog at the End of the World is the most moving story you'll listen to this year.
Perfect for fans of Life of Pi, The Girl with all the Gifts or Station Eleven - Griz's tale mixes sadness and hope in one unforgettable character's quest amid the remnants of our fragile civilisation.
Critic Reviews
"You'll remember A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World long after you finish reading." (Peng Shepherd, author of The Book Of M)
"Truly engrossing...brings hope and humanity to a cold and scary world." (Keith Stuart, author of A Boy Made of Blocks)
"I promise you're going to love it." (Louisa Morgan, author of A Secret History of Witches)

Gorgeously enjoyable story
I really enjoyed this book. The narration was superb and easy to listen to, and the story was just a delight. Although occasionally slow going, it was lovely to view this strange new world through such innocent but clever eyes. I initially thought it would be lovely to share with my 12yr old daughter but there was a bit of adult content towards the end so she will have to wait a while. I would absolutely recommend this story.

Marvellous story
I picked this up based on a recommendation by Mike Carey, and I'm so glad I did. It's a marvellous book, immediately gripping, read very well by the author. Griz is an engaging character, and the author is clearly a dog person, as the dogs are also fully fleshed characters. The book is an adventure, a musing on what it means to be human, an end-of-the-world story, and a tribute to dogs and the people who love them. My only criticism is the author's overuse of sometimes clumsy foreshadowing, but that is a minor issue. As far as dystopian novels go, it is really refreshing to read one where survivors are more focused on reestablishing a way to live rather than devolving into hyperviolent warlord societies. Highly recommended.

A really enjoyable story with beautiful depth into loyalty, trust and tenacity, some personal growth thrown in
I love this story, it’s about a journey to discover the self, with only a very few other humans to influence that outcome, and even then there is sparse communication. It puts our lack of free will into perspective and shows that we must trust ourselves and keep on going no matter what..... the way dogs do

Loved getting lost in this
It was a good choice by the author to narrate this story- I got lost in his voice. It was a different take on my favourite sub-genre and I thought it was cleverly executed. It left me with some questions and I am wondering if the author will return to these characters and setting. I would certainly be pleased if he did.
