Publisher's Summary

No one likes to eat alone; to approach a table filled with people, only to be told that despite the open chairs there isn't room for you. The rejection stings. It leaves a mark. Yet this is exactly what the church has been saying to far too many people for far too long: "You're not welcome here. Find someplace else to sit." How can we extend unconditional welcome and acceptance in a world increasingly marked by bigotry, fear, and exclusion?

Pastor John Pavlovitz invites listeners to join him on the journey to find or build a church that is big enough for everyone. He speaks clearly into the heart of the issues the Christian community has been earnestly wrestling with: LGBT inclusion, gender equality, racial tensions, and global concerns. A Bigger Table: Building Messy, Authentic, Hopeful Spiritual Community asks if organized Christianity can find a new way of faithfully continuing the work Jesus began 2,000 years ago, where everyone gets a seat.

Pavlovitz shares moving personal stories and his careful observations as a pastor to set the table for a new, more loving conversation on these and other important matters of faith. He invites us to build the bigger table Jesus imagined, practicing radical hospitality, total authenticity, messy diversity, and agenda-free community.

True Bigger Tabke

Wow...book is honest, brave, clear meaninful story and timely. Gives voice to what a lot of folks would like to say but are not in a community or situation to speak their truth.

Disappointed

More memoir and not at all what I expected. Very disappointed. Would not recommend this book.

disappointing

Loved the message but found little substance. Nothing I could use to begin deconstructing the lessons of organized religion as suggested. Perhaps I was expecting too much? it was very repetitive after the first five chapters and I found myself saying "yes, you said that, and...?" I wanted to leave this feeling energized to make changes but I am left feeling slightly irritated for none of the right reasons.

Thank you!

A book for all, who want to grow. A book that will tic those off not ready to grow. Jesus wants us all to sit at the table.
Jesus' example was and is just that - all are included - all are loved by God. John hits the nail on the head many many times, in that some and all too many churches know how to exclude, but not to include - and that Christianity, in some circles, has a negative connotation. I thought I was the only one who thought this. Thank you John Pavlovitz for helping me grow.

Couldn’t make it through intro

The book wasn’t what it was advertised. I am bummed I wasted a credit on it.
