Отрицательное отношение к "Тысячи и одной ночи" реакционно настроенных арабских филологов XIX века печально отразилось на судьбе ее печатных изданий. Научного критического текста "Ночей" еще не существует; первое полное издание сборника, выпущенное в Булаке, под Каиром, в 1835 году и неоднократно перепечатанное впоследствии, воспроизводит так называемую "египетскую редакцию". В булакском тексте язык сказок претерпел под пером анонимного "ученого" богослова значительную обработку; редактор стремился приблизить текст к классическим нормам литературной речи. В несколько меньшей мере деятельность обработчика заметна в калькуттском издании, опубликованного английским ученым Макнатеном в 1839-1842 годах. Булакское и калькуттское издания положены в основу существующих переводов "Книги тысячи и одной ночи".
