من وحي أيام المرض التي قضاها الشاعر الراحل أمل دنقل في الغرفة رقم 8 في مستشفى قصر العيني في القاهرة في عام 1983، جاءت مذكرات صديقة فهمي عبد السلام بعد 34 عاماً من الرحيل، لتجدد الأحزان وتثير الشجون حول مسيرة شاعر الرفض ومحنة مرضه العضال، الذي سكن جسده وأنهى حياته وهو في أوج مجده وعطائه وصلابته..

تأتي هذه المذكرات مجافية لكل ما كتب عن أمل شعراً ونثراً، فلم يلتزم عبد السلام بأي من المناهج الأكاديمية في تقديم صديقه الشاعر وتقييم شعره، لكنه غاير السائد والمألوف وطرق أبواباً مختلفة، وأفرد مساحات واسعة جابها طولاً وعرضاً ملقياً الضوء على الجوانب الإنسانية والاجتماعية والثقافية في حياة المثقف، الذي أضناه المرض وأعيته المجابهة.

يبدأ الكاتب مذكراته مع الشاعر من لحظة لقائهما الأول في مقهى سوق الحميدية في وسط العاصمة في أوائل السبعينيات، حيث يجتمع المثقفون من كل ألوان الطيف السياسي والثقافي، ويُنهيها في الغرفة الرمادية رقم (8).
