Наиболее поздними по времени создания являются сказки плутовского жанра, по-видимому включенные в сборник в Египте, при его последней обработке. Рассказы эти тоже сложились в городской среде, но отражают уже жизнь мелких ремесленников, подённых рабочих и бедняков, перебивающихся случайными заработками. Для плутовских сказок характерна едкая ирония изображения представителей светской власти и духовенства в самом неприглядном виде. Сюжетом многих таких повестей является мошенничество, имеющее целью не столько ограбить, сколько одурачить какого-нибудь простака. Рассказ о Далиле-Хитрице - блестящий пример подобного типа рассказов.
