При исследовании "Тысячи и одной ночи" каждую сказку надлежит рассматривать особо, так как органической связи между ними нет, и они до включения в сборник долгое время существовали самостоятельно. Попытки объединить некоторые из них в группы по месту их предполагаемого происхождения - из Индии, Ирана или Багдада - недостаточно обоснованы. Сюжеты рассказов Шахразады сложились из отдельных элементов, которые могли проникнуть на арабскую почву из Ирана или Индии независимо один от другого; на своей новой родине они обросли чисто туземными наслоениями и издревле считались достоянием арабского фольклора.
