Последним компилятором сборника "Тысячи и одной ночи" был неизвестный по имени ученый шейх, который составил в XVIII веке в Египте наиболее позднее по времени собрание сказок "Тысячи и одной ночи". Самую значительную литературную обработку получили сказки также в Египте, двумя или тремя столетиями раньше. Эта редакция XIV - XVI веков "Книги тысяча и одной ночи", обычно называемая "египетской", - единственная сохранившаяся до наших дней - представлена в большинстве печатных изданий, а также почти во всех известных нам рукописях "Ночей" и служит конкретным материалом для изучения сказок Шахразады.
