サリドマイドは1957年に催眠剤として発売されました。ところが、妊婦が妊娠初期
にサリドマイドを服用したことが原因で1950年代後半から1960年代前半に手足に異常
を持った子供が生まれる事故が相次ぎ、製品が回収される事態となり、日本でも多く
の被害者を出しました。その後、サリドマイドの血管新生阻害作用が発見され、最
