Publisher's Summary

The first in an intelligent, multi-layered crime series featuring DI Eva Harris.

A vicious killer on the loose, a traitor on the team - and a past that’s catching up with her.

Can DI Harris see the truth before it’s too late?

An expert killer who takes his victims’ eyes - can DI Harris see clearly enough to uncover the truth?

On the first day of her new job, Harris is called to the scene of a brutal murder at the heart of Surrey society. A shocking crime, with a meticulous killer: the victim’s eyes have been removed and the body drained of blood, with no forensic evidence left at the scene.

Her boss insists it must be the return of a killer who escaped justice several years ago, leaving a trail of bloody ritualistic killings. Harris isn’t so sure: both sets of victims have had their eyes removed, but other details are significantly different.

But Harris’s desperate desire to uncover the truth is complicated by her secret mission to find corruption at the heart of the police. Who can she trust in her own team? Harris is also hiding a secret past of her own - can she find the killer and learn who to depend on, before her dark history catches up with her?

Very good story - awful narration!

I really enjoyed the story and if it hadn’t of been so good I don’t think I could have put up with the narration.
The narrator bizarrely reads the book in a very slow staccato fashion. I would recommend increasing the reading speed to 1.2x normal as I found this ‘speeded’ her up enough to persevere.
The story is very good though, good twists and turns and main character engaging.

Good story line, reduced by awkward narration and the miss use of psychological terminology

On the plus side, the story line kept me engaged. Unfortunately, at times it was hard to tell who was saying what as the narrator’s voice didn’t really vary enough between characters (I may have been spoiled by other seriously great narrators on Audible), but most disappointing was that the author lacked an understanding of some of the psychological terminology he used. If it had been once or twice it would have been easier to ignore. Mixing up psychosis with personality disorder became pretty irritating.

Good story

I enjoyed the story, but still found this a challenging book to get through only because of the narration which was really odd. It was almost robotic at times. Slow with no feel or flow. I had to speed it up to get through which made me think that maybe it was recorded at the wrong speed.

Detective British Style

Carl Goodman keeps you reading with a multitude of entwined story lines! Characters are believable and the setting is well described.

just started

only 3 chapters in & the story looks promising, the performance however, is wooden.. at times it sounds like a computer generated voice.
I'll persevere...

Powerful and complex

A very action packed story from a very clever author. A bit over my head in quite a few places when technology was explained but it fits the book. The reader was a little monotonous and used full English diction such as can not rather than can’t but I don’t think she was meant to be acting, rather telling the story.
Plenty of blood, murder and sex. Overall an enjoyable story, that I should read again to understand better.

Delivery of story was slow and unemotional. Plot was a bit odd but still good to get a conclusion by the end.

One of the better books I have listened to recently. Although the storyline and characters are not particularly believable it is engaging. The narrator does stumble a couple of times and sentences didn't always flow as I thought they should. This did not however spoil the story.
