La 1ère, 2ème et 3ème épître de Jean sont des livres du Nouveau Testament. Le texte de la première a été composé après l'évangile selon Jean dont il présuppose l'existence et la lecture. Celui-ci la fin du Ier siècle ce qui porte les chercheurs à proposer une datation incluse entre 100 et 110. L'auteur de cette épître et de la suivante ne donne pas son nom mais se nomme l'"Ancien" qui est à considérer comme une figure importante de l'école johannique et dont l'assimilation parfois propose à Jean le Presbytre relève de la conjecture. La lettre provient d'Asie Mineure, peut-être d'Éphèse, où elle a été rédigée vers 110.
