On 21 July, 2024, President Joseph R. Biden bowed out of the US presidential campaign and Vice President Kamala Harris stepped in. She had 107 days to mount a campaign, meet American citizens from coast-to-coast, debate, raise money (those fundraising Zooms were epic), and convince voters to elect her on November 5. The morning of the election in the States, I called a colleague and told her how emotional I felt. I couldn’t quite pinpoint if I was overwhelmingly happy that a Black woman was potentially going to call the White House home, or that she got this far. Now, 24 September, 2025, will be just as significant for me, since it’s when I will listen to Harris narrate her political memoir. It will undoubtedly lodge somewhere in my psyche forever. Honest, heartfelt, and humbly acknowledging the errors she made. Her overall loyalty to Biden cost her the election, and Biden, should have handed over the reigns much earlier. I hope she makes a comeback 🙏🏼

I found 107 Days strangely hard to judge. On one level, I mostly found it boring. On another, I could not stop listening to it. I stuck with it, which probably says something about the pull of the story, even when the telling did not always excite me.

The strongest parts of the book are the details. Kamala Harris gives a vivid sense of what it was like to be dropped into an almost impossible campaign: the travel, the pressure, the strategy, the debate preparation, and the constant awareness that time was running out. As an audiobook, it has the added weight of hearing Harris tell the story herself.

At the same time, I came away with the impression that something was being held back. The book is revealing, but only up to a point. It gives you enough detail to understand the stress and frustration of those 107 days, but enough distance to make the account feel incomplete. There is a sense that some details are missing in order to preserve a certain righteousness.

The most unfortunate thread is the relationship between Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Whatever the public loyalty between them, the book left me with the impression that they were not really on the same page in terms of respect, timing, or political reality. Harris seems to have inherited a situation she could not fully control, but she also tells the story from a position that does not always invite the reader to question her too deeply.

So I did not love 107 Days, but I did find it compelling. It is not a thrilling book, and it is not always a satisfying one, but it is a vivid account of a remarkable political collapse told by someone standing at the centre of it.
