About this listen
Sam Becker loves—or, okay, likes—his job. Sure, managing a bed-and-bath retailer isn't exactly glamorous, but it's good work, and he gets on well with the band of misfits who keep the store running. He could see himself being content here for the long haul. Too bad, then, that the owner is an infuriating git.
Jonathan Forest should never have hired Sam. It was a sentimental decision, and Jonathan didn't get where he is by following his heart. Determined to set things right, Jonathan orders Sam down to London for a difficult talk…only for a panicking Sam to trip, bump his head, and maybe accidentally imply he doesn't remember anything?
Faking amnesia seemed like a good idea when Sam was afraid he was getting sacked, but now he has to deal with the reality of Jonathan's guilt—as well as the unsettling fact that his surly boss might have a softer side to him. There's an unexpected freedom in getting a second shot at a first impression…but as Sam and Jonathan grow closer, can Sam really bring himself to tell the truth, or will their future be built entirely on one impulsive lie?
©2023 Alexis Hall (P)2023 Dreamscape MediaThis is a very endearing and uplifting story. It takes you into a journey of people fighting different types of loneliness, and finding themselves and each other at the end.
All the characters are very well developed and absolutely loveable, from the main ones (Sam and Jonathan), to the ones that make a tiny cameo (the feller who would accept Christmas emergency as an excuse), to places and landmarks that feel like characters in their own right (Sheffield). I am not from the UK, but now I know what river not to fight.
The book is full of humour and very wholesome, with laugh out loud sections.
It has romance but you won't end up red-faced if your device accidentally connected to the neighbour's speaker while you were listening (for those who use the ratings, maybe 2 chillies?). If anything, your neighbour may ask you to start from the beginning.
Will Watt did a brilliant job bringing everyone to life. Each character has it's own voice and feeling.
It is not just for the LGBTIQ+ community and allies, but for anyone who wants a feel good story to restore your faith in human kind. Also for those who have a lovable, loud, rowdy and occasionally annoying family. You are not alone in your struggles dealing with them. Cheaper than therapy :)
The greatest achievement in life is finding someone to love

I really enjoyed the humour and shop colleague drama. The main characters challenge each other as they both learn to trust and grow as people. Which I really felt was done right and not rushed.
It’s the Guinea Pig ornament for me!

Faking amnesia to avoid being fired is a bit extreme and the bosses family were a bit OTT but it was all done in such a humorous way that I just went with the flow. All the characters were hilarious in their own way (but good god, someone do something about Brian 😂) but there were also many sweet moments that endeared them to me.
I've already checked out other books by this author because I feel like I'm going to get a good laugh with those too. The audio narrator, Will Watt, did an absolutely fantastic job, with multiple accents and genders. His comedic timing was perfect.
This gave me a giggle
