Август Четырнадцатого задуман автором в 1937 году - ещё не как Узел Первый, но как вступление в большой роман о русской революции. Тогда же, в 1937 в Ростове-на-Дону, собраны все материалы по Самсоновской катастрофе, доступные в советских условиях (немалые), - и написаны первые главы. Затем в работе над романом наступил перерыв до 1963 года (все заготовки сохранились через годы войны и тюрьмы), когда автор снова стал усиленно собирать материалы. В 1965 определяется название "Красное Колесо", с 1967 - принцип Узлов, то есть сплошного густого изложения событий в сжатые отрезки времени, но с полными перерывами между ними.
