 東北の日本海側に聳える二千メートル級の独立峰・鳥海山。 その神を祀る、ただならぬ名を持つ大物忌神社は、 出羽国一の宮であり、古くから朝廷に重んぜられて来た。 そこには、一体どんな背景があるのか。 ○鳥海山は、度々噴火を繰り返して来た活火山であった ○出羽の蝦夷は屈強で、なかなか朝廷に従わなかった ○火山と蝦夷、これら「荒ぶる」存在を鎮めるという意図があった ○手長足長という、「まつろわぬ民」を彷彿とさせる妖怪の伝承も 手長足長という妖怪は、羽前・羽後国境の有耶無耶関にあって人々を悩ませ、 大物忌神が天より火を降らせて滅ぼしたとも、慈覚大師が法力で退治したともいう。 この関を越えて行った松尾芭蕉は、松島と同じような象潟の風景に魅せられた。 多数の小島が浮かぶ象潟は、鳥海山の噴火に伴う地震によって隆起して陸地となった。 このほか、周辺の土地には、いくつもの注目すべき史跡や伝承がある。 ●麓の沿岸には、「なまはげ」で有名な男鹿と対になる、女鹿という地名がある ●女鹿の近くには、荒磯に刻まれた巨大な石仏群、羅漢岩が立ち並ぶ ●沖に浮かぶ飛島は、鳥海山の頭が飛んで行って出来たと伝わる ●その飛島には、小物忌神社が建ち、蝦夷が住んだという人骨の見つかった洞穴もある 万年雪の斜面を踏み越え、荒ぶる神の住む山に挑み、 荒海を越えて離島にも渡った、御山人の登山渡海行。 語り:高橋御山人 聞き役:盛池雄峰2014 リブラ・エージェンシー Travel Writing & Commentary
