 東京より南へ358km、伊豆諸島有人島最南端の青ヶ島。 一番近い有人島の八丈島からでも、南に65km離れている絶海の孤島。 行政区分としては一島一村の青ヶ島村より成り、 人口約170人、日本で最も人口の少ない市区町村となっている。 島の周囲を絶壁のような山に取り囲まれた島で、船を泊める場所にも窮する。 八丈島からの定期船はあるが、接岸が難しく、就航率は6割程度。 八丈島からの1日1往復のヘリコプターが主たる交通手段。 昭和の30年代でも月に一度しか船が来ず、完全な自給自足社会であり、 赴任した小学教師が「明治時代に逆戻りだ」と逃げ出そうとした程だった。 また青ヶ島は火山島であり、島の内側はカルデラとなっている。 絶壁のような山が外輪山となって、カルデラの内部にさらに火山がある。 この火山が江戸時代に大噴火し、多くの犠牲者を出した。 生き残った全島民も八丈島で五十年に渡って避難生活を送った。 五十年後島民を率いて「還住」を果たした名主を、 柳田國男は「青ヶ島のモーセ」と讃えている。 こんな過酷な環境の青ヶ島には、それゆえに、古より特殊な信仰が伝わる。 あちこちに祠があり、御幣が立てられる青ヶ島は、「神の島」と呼ばれている。 島の巫女は、舞い踊るうちに神憑り、悪霊を祓い人々を癒すシャーマン、呪医だった。 島の総鎮守、大里神社では、鬼面の子が女面の母を蘇生させるという筋書きの 「でいらほん祭」が、かつて行われていた。 東台所神社では、恋人と悲劇の別れをし、多数の村人を殺戮して自殺した名主の息子を、 祟らないように神として祀っており、今は縁結びの神として信仰されている。 渡海神社は、江戸時代の噴火による犠牲者を祀り、夥しい数の御幣が立てられている。 絶海の孤島に伝えられる、シャーマニックな死と再生の呪術や儀礼、伝承を探る。 語り:高橋御山人 聞き役:盛池雄峰(C)2015 リブラ・エージェンシー Travel Writing & Commentary
