 岩手県南部の都市、北上市。東北一の大河・北上川に沿う、 肥沃な盆地にあたるこの土地には、古くから蝦夷(えみし)が暮らしていた。 この豊かな土地を巡って、争いも繰り広げられる。 平安初期、蝦夷の指導者アテルイを、征夷大将軍・坂上田村麻呂が、激戦の末に破る。 このとき坂上田村麻呂は、信濃の諏訪大明神を勧請し、当地に諏訪神社を建てたという。 平安中期には、岩手の豪族・安倍氏が、黒沢尻の柵を築いた。 黒沢尻は北上の地名として残り、北上駅近くに、柵跡も残っている。 前九年の役では、安倍氏の一族・正任(まさとう)が黒沢尻の柵を守るが、 命運尽きて安倍氏は源氏に滅ぼされる。 その後、諏訪大明神の神託によって、正任鎮魂のための舞が、神事として始められる。 それが今も北上周辺に広く伝わる民俗芸能・鬼剣舞(おにけんばい)であるという。 諏訪神社は、鬼剣舞を中心に様々な郷土芸能が演じられる、 「北上みちのく芸能まつり」の会場の一つでもあり、多くの見物客が詰めかける。 鬼剣舞は先祖供養の念仏踊りの一種であるが、鬼の面を付け、金色の長い髪を振り、 「反閇(へんばい)」という呪術的な歩行を行う、勇壮な踊りで、独自性に富む。 日本各地で様々な郷土芸能が危機に瀕している中、北上周辺では、鬼剣舞が、 年長者から若年者へ、各地域で熱心に継承されており、共同体の紐帯となっている。 鬼剣舞が有する勇壮さに、現代的な「カッコよさ」もあるためか、 郷土芸能を「ダサイ」と嫌いがちな、思春期あるいは成年の男女にも支持されている。 古くは、歌の上手な者は、それだけで結婚に困らなかったとする民俗調査もあれば、 戦後から現代でも、バンドやダンスが出来ると「モテる」という社会通念もある。 蝦夷鎮魂の、千年に渡る先祖供養の踊りの中に、まさかの「人類普遍の法則」を見る。 語り:高橋御山人 聞き役:盛池雄峰2014 リブラ・エージェンシー Travel Writing & Commentary
