 九州南東部、宮崎県から鹿児島県にかけての地域、 宮崎県都城市山之口、同県日南市飫肥、鹿児島県曽於市岩川に鎮座する、 三社の八幡神社では、「弥五郎どん」の祭りが行われる。 面を付けた高さ数メートルの大きな人形「弥五郎どん」が練り歩く、 この祭礼には、古代にまで遡る由緒があった。 ○朝廷の勢力圏外であった南九州には、隼人と呼ばれる土着民が住んでいた ○奈良時代、反抗的な隼人も征伐され、完全に朝廷に服属する ○隼人征伐に神威を示したと言われるのが、八幡神社総本宮の宇佐神宮 ○宇佐の託宣により始まった「放生会」が、「弥五郎どん」の起源 南九州の「まつろわぬ民」の慰霊が「弥五郎どん」の祭りの目的であり、 それは同時に、南九州の民が「中央」とは異なる習俗を持っていたことと、 その独立独歩の気風を、今に伝えていくこととなった。 ●島津氏は関ヶ原の戦いで西軍に味方するも、中央突破して薩摩に戻った ●琉球を支配し、鎖国体制下でも独自に海外交易を行った ●長州とともに討幕の中心となり、明治維新を成し遂げた ●維新から程なくして、西南戦争により明治政府と戦った これら、近代に至るまで「まつろわぬ」気概を持ち続けた、 「薩摩隼人」のルーツの一つが、「弥五郎どん」ではないか。 荒ぶる桜島の噴火と降灰にも、その本質を垣間見る。 語り:高橋御山人 聞き役:盛池雄峰2014 リブラ・エージェンシー Travel Writing & Commentary
