 石川県、能登半島先端部に近い能登町の山中に、岩井戸神社が建つ。その境内には「猿鬼」が住んだという岩屋がある。猿鬼は、能登半島北部に伝わる鬼で、塚や戦場など、数多くの伝承地が残る。その伝説は壮大なものだ。数々の手下を率い、人々に危害を加える猿鬼を、輪島市三井・大幡神杉伊豆牟比咩神社（おおはたかむすぎいずむひめじんじゃ）の杉神姫が、人々の願いにより退治しようとするが、その力に屈し逃げ帰る。そこで神無月、出雲へ行って八百万の神々に相談したところ、能登一宮・気多大社を始め、能登の神々総出で退治することとなる。神々は武装して戦いに臨むが、容易に矢をかわし、掴み取り、漆で塗り固めた全身で弾き返して、剣をも折ってしまう猿鬼達の前に、またしても逃げ帰る。それから、杉神姫が海岸で啓示を受け、筒状の矢の中にもう一本細い毒矢を仕込むことにした。さらに、岩井戸の前で、白い布の下に武器を隠し、酒宴を開いて、天岩戸神話のアメノウズメノミコトさながらに杉神姫が舞い、相手を油断させ、ようやくにして討つことが出来たという。縄文時代の「ウッドサークル」が残る真脇遺跡があり、秋田の「ナマハゲ」と同じ来訪神の行事「アマメハギ」も伝わる能登町の、一大スペクタクルを考察する。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
