 宮崎県北東部の山間にある高千穂は、神話伝承の地である。天照大神の孫・ニニギノミコトが天照大神の命を受け、地上の統治の為に高天原より降臨した場所が、この高千穂とされ、天孫降臨の地として知られる。それだけでなく、高千穂には様々な神話伝承地があり、その中でも有名なものが、天岩戸神社だ。この神社の御神体は渓流沿いの岩窟であるが、これこそ天照大神が隠れた岩戸だという。その他、岩戸隠れの際、八百万の神々が集まって相談したという天安河原や、高天原の水を移したという天真名井など、数々の伝承地があるのだが、高千穂には、こうした「聖なる神々」の伝承地だけでなく、荒ぶる「まつろわぬ」鬼たちの伝承もある。その代表的なものが、神武天皇の兄に討たれた鬼八（きはち）であり、夜神楽で有名な高千穂神社には、その討伐の様子が彫刻されている。また、日向国風土記逸文には、天孫ニニギノミコトの降臨時、地上は暗闇に覆われていたが、二人の土蜘蛛の助言で明るくなったという神話が載っている。ここでは天孫に協力しているが、土蜘蛛は、記紀・風土記で天皇に逆らう土着の勢力として描かれ、後世には人を食う妖怪とされている。「魔」の影ちらつく神話の舞台の謎を解く。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
