 栃木県最北部の那須町には、那須湯本温泉があり、行楽地として賑わっている。その温泉の神として、古くから温泉神社が祀られている。源平屋島の戦いで、那須与一が、舟上の扇の的を射る際に祈った神でもあるという。その境内には、九尾稲荷神社もある。これは、那須に伝わる九尾の狐退治伝説に由来する。九尾の狐は、三千年に渡って転生を繰り返し、中国、インド、日本をまたにかけて悪行の限りを尽くしたという大妖怪であり、「封神演義」で有名な殷王朝最後の王・紂王を誑かした妃の妲己もその化身という。日本では、女官・玉藻前として鳥羽上皇の寵愛を受けるが、陰陽師・安倍泰成に正体を見破られて那須に逃げ、死闘の末に討たれる。しかし、その後巨石に変化し、毒気を噴いて、近付く生き物を殺したという。その石が、那須湯本の奥にある殺生石であり、一帯は温泉が湧き、硫化水素ガスが噴出して草木も生えない地獄地帯となっている。なお、玉藻前が討たれたという那須地方南東部の大田原市には、玉藻稲荷神社も建っている。その近隣には那須神社があり、ここもまた那須与一が扇の的を射る際に祈った神だという。彼は幼少の頃、この辺りに住んだと伝わる。那須地方は古より栄え、大田原には飛鳥時代の石碑をご神体とする神社もある。不可思議な伝承に彩られた、那須野の古跡を巡る旅話。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
