 熊本県南東部の五家荘は、険しい山に囲まれた秘境。壇ノ浦で敗れた平家が落ち延び隠れ住んだが、源頼朝の命を受けた那須与一の息子・小太郎が、追討にやって来た。それを知った鬼山御前なる平家の女官は、仲間を討たせまいと、何とか小太郎を引き留める。彼女は元の名を玉虫御前といい、那須与一が屋島で射た扇を、舟上で用意した女官であった。やがて二人は結ばれてここで暮らし、その子孫の那須家は今も続いている。彼女を祀る神社もあり、巨乳で乳の出も良かったという伝承により、乳の神として崇められている。また、五家荘という地名の由来は、五つの集落にそれぞれの庄屋がいるためで、うち三つが平家の子孫を名乗る。残り二つは、菅原道真の子孫という。藤原時平の讒言により左遷された道真は、大宰府で憤死したが、復讐を恐れた時平は二人の子らを討とうとした為、五家荘へ逃れ土着したと伝わる。こうして「落人の隠れ里」となった五家荘だが、やがて人口が増えて食糧が不足し、隠れ住むのも限界となり、武力で名を馳せた阿蘇大宮司家へ同盟を申し出て、武装化する。一般には戦を忘れて平和に暮らしたというイメージのある「落人の里」だが、実際には武装し、血筋の尊さを伝え、いつか再興する事を夢見続けた、覇気と執念に満ちた集落なのだ。「落人」の実態に迫り、その現代的意義を考える。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
