 大分県西北の内陸、日田市には、渓谷沿いに湧く天ヶ瀬温泉があるが、その南側の高原に、五馬市（いつまいち）という土地がある。ここは、豊後国風土記に、土蜘蛛・五馬媛（いつまひめ）がいたと記される地である。五馬市の玉来神社（たまらいじんじゃ）は、景行天皇とその五馬媛を祭神としている。土蜘蛛とは、記紀や風土記において、天皇、朝廷に従わず、その多くが討たれたとされる辺境の民であり、神社の祭神とされているのはここが唯一の例と思われる。ただし、全ての土蜘蛛が朝廷に従わず討たれたと書かれる訳ではなく、例外もある。五馬媛も、特に朝廷との関係は書かれていない。景行天皇は、日本書紀や風土記に九州の土蜘蛛を数多く討った事績があるが、五馬媛との関係は特に記されていない。にも関わらず、玉来神社では並んで祭神とされている。また、同じ五馬市の元宮神社は、五馬媛のものとされる古墳の上に立っている。さらに、近くにある宇土古墳群には、女性首長を葬った古墳も存在している。古文書、伝承、考古資料の全てが、古、ここに卑弥呼のような女性首長がいた事を示している。はるか太古の、シャーマニズムと母権社会の記憶を伝えて来た、五馬市。それから千数百年、父権社会の崩壊局面にある今、それらの意義や遷移について、根底から再考する。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
