 和歌山市の日前・國懸神宮（ひのくま・くにかかすじんぐう）は、紀伊一宮。天照大神の天の岩戸隠れの際に作られた三種の神器の一つ・八咫鏡（やたのかがみ）に先立って作られた二枚の鏡を祀るとされ、日本書紀にも載る、非常に古く格式の高い神社である。その祭祀は、土佐日記の作者・紀貫之を輩出した古代豪族・紀氏により、神代より今に至るまで続けられている。その境内にある中言神社（なかごとじんじゃ）に祀られる名草姫命（なぐさひめのみこと）は、紀氏の祖神の一柱であるが、地元には、名草姫命は日本書紀において神武天皇に逆らい討たれたという、当地の首領・名草戸畔（なぐさとべ）のこととする伝承がある。「名草」とは、紀三井寺の建つ名草山に見られるように、当地の古名であり、「戸畔」とは、女性シャーマンを意味するという。名草戸畔は、討たれた後に首、胴、足の三つに分断されて葬られたとされ、それぞれの地に神社が建っている。頭を葬った地、海南市の小野田には宇賀部神社（うがべじんじゃ）が建つが、その地の名を負う小野田家からは、第二次大戦中フィリピンに赴き、三十年近く潜伏して帰還した、小野田寛郎（ひろお）氏が出ている。古代から現代へ続く紀州の「まつろわぬ」系譜を読み解く。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
