 佐賀市の北の郊外に鎮座する與止日女神社（よどひめじんじゃ）は、肥前一宮。嘉瀬川畔、肥前国府の近くに建ち、現存する五風土記の一書「肥前国風土記」にも登場する古社だ。風土記によれば、嘉瀬川の上流に荒ぶる神がおり、往来の人の半分を生かし、半分は殺していた。そこで領主が占いで神意を問うたところ、土蜘蛛（記紀や風土記に登場する、朝廷に反逆的な「まつろわぬ民」）の大山田女（おおやまだめ）と狭山田女（さやまだめ）が、埴輪のような土の人形・馬形を神に捧げれば、祟りは鎮まると告げた。その通りにしたら祟りが鎮まったので、領主は彼女達を「さかしい（＝賢い）女」だと誉めた。それが「佐賀」という地名の由来だという。また風土記には、川上に石神がおり、毎年海の神たるワニ（サメまたはナマズとされる）と小魚たちが遡上して来るが、捕って食べると死ぬことがある、とも書かれている。そして、現代のこの地域を見てみると、土蜘蛛の女性達の名を残す「東山田」という地名があり、嘉瀬川上流には「肥前大和巨石パーク」と名付けられた古くから信仰される巨石群があり、ナマズを食べないという風習がある。人の往来が激しく、先進文化が押し寄せる、近代を開いた佐賀という地の特性を古代に見る。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
