 群馬県東部の安中市に「羊神社」がある。集落の外れにある小さな神社ではあるが、境内には狛犬と別に「狛羊」もあり、干支にちなんで未年には多くの参拝者が訪れる。その名は「羊太夫」に由来する。羊太夫は、秩父で日本初の銅を見つけ、その功績により、上野国に新設された多胡郡を朝廷より与えられたという。「羊」という人物に多胡郡を与えたことは、「続日本紀」や、羊神社より少し離れた高崎市内に残る「多胡碑」（日本三碑の一つに数えられる古代の石碑）にも刻まれている。伝説によれば、羊太夫には八束脛（やつかはぎ）という神通力を持つ従者がおり、その力で空を飛んで、毎日都へ上り、参内していたという。しかし、あるとき好奇心に駆られて、羊太夫が八束脛の腋の羽を抜いてしまうと、空を飛べなくなり、参内出来なくなってしまう。その為、朝敵として討たれてしまったといわれる。一方、八束脛は金色の蝶に化身して飛び去り、群馬県最北部の水上にある、八束脛洞窟に住んだという。そこには八束脛を祀る祠が建つが、弥生時代の遺跡も発掘されている。また遠く離れた名古屋市には、羊太夫が都へ上る途中で立ち寄ったという場所に、同じく「羊神社」が建つ。未年にちなんだ神社のミステリーを探る。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
