 岡山市の吉備津神社は、備中一宮。祭神の吉備津彦命は、大和朝廷の黎明期、全国平定の為に派遣された「四道将軍」の一人だが、当地では「温羅（うら）」という鬼を退治したと伝わり、昔話「桃太郎」のモデルとされる。境内には、拝殿や本殿とは別に「御釜殿」という建物があり、その鳴り具合により吉凶を占っている。斬られても唸り続ける温羅の首を鎮める為、温羅の妻・阿曽媛（あぞひめ）に、その上で神饌を炊かせたのが起源とされ、阿曽媛の出身地・阿曽郷から選ばれた「阿曽女（あぞめ）」が、今に至るまで仕えている。阿曽郷は、古くから製鉄を生業とした地であり、温羅の居城とされる鬼ノ城（きのじょう）の麓でもあるのだが、その鬼ノ城は、「朝鮮式山城」と呼ばれる、古代に築かれた城跡だ。その他数多くの伝承地があるが、それは同時に古代遺跡であることも多い。そもそも、一帯には数多くの古墳が存在し「吉備路」と呼ばれる観光地となっている。温羅伝説とは、古代、製鉄で栄えた「吉備王国」が朝廷に討伐されたことを伝えるものらしい。その伝承の中心地・吉備津神社は、盛池雄峰、高橋御山人両名の「人生の分岐点」でもあった。「まつろわぬ」鬼と鉄と巫女とが「運命」を教え導く神社の思い出を語り合う。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
