 新潟県の上越市高田は、かつて盲目の女旅芸人「瞽女(ごぜ)」の拠点であった。高田を拠点にした瞽女は「高田瞽女」と呼ばれ(もう一つの拠点は同じ新潟県の長岡)、北陸地方を中心に各地を巡り、三味線を弾きながら唄を歌った。瞽女は、遅くとも室町時代には存在しており、江戸時代には、高田や長岡では一つの場所に家を連ねて集まって暮らす「瞽女屋敷」が形成された。近代に入っても、瞽女の活動は盛んであったが、戦後は様々な大衆娯楽が世に溢れ、瞬く間に衰退し、「瞽女唄」自体は今も伝承されているものの、生業としては完全に消滅した。その為「瞽女の街」高田にも、その痕跡はほとんどない。が、同じ上越市の名立の山奥に、瞽女がよく参拝したという雁田神社がある。江戸時代、畑から偶然発見された陰陽石(男根と女陰の形の石)を祀ったもので、今も社殿の真後ろに数多くの陰陽石が祭られている。陰陽石に関係して、下半身の健康を司る神と考えられ、足腰の神ともなり、社殿内には硬貨で作られた足、腰の字が奉納されている。また、名立から山一つ越えた、糸魚川市能生町の山中には、かつて「瞽女宿」であった、島道鉱泉がある。厳しい戒律を持ち、呪力ある存在とも見なされた、漂泊の芸能者、瞽女。盛池雄峰思い出の地・高田にまつわる「忘れられた日本人」の姿を、高橋御山人とともに幻視する。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
