 鳥取市西部の白兎海岸は、神話の「因幡の白兎」の舞台となった場所である。隠岐島に住む兎が、本土に渡るため、ワニの数を数えると騙して、海にズラリと並ばせて、その上を渡るが、最後のところで騙したことを明らかにしてしまい、報復としてワニに皮をはがれたという話だ。その後、因幡の八上比売（やがみひめ）に求婚する旅の途上であった、大国主命の兄神達に騙されて傷が悪化するが、大国主命に救われて、大国主命が八上比売と結ばれることを予言する。鳥取市の南部内陸には、この八上比売を祭る売沼神社（めぬまじんじゃ）もある。中国地方では古くからサメのことをワニと呼び、広島県の三次市周辺ではその刺身などもよく食べられているが、このワニにまつわる話は、出雲国風土記でも見られる。その一つは島根県安来市の「史実」として書かれた話で、さる姫が海岸にいたところワニに食われてしまい、父が神に祈ってその復讐を果たすというもの。これは安来に伝わる「月の輪神事」の起源ともされている。もう一つは同県奥出雲町の「鬼の舌震（おにのしたぶるい）」という峡谷の伝承で、上流に住む玉日女命（たまひめのみこと）を恋い慕ったワニが上って来るが、これを嫌った玉日女命が、石で川を堰き止めたというもの。山陰の神話に伝わる、海より来るワニとは何なのか。その真相を探る。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
