 鳥取県南東部の八頭町には、古事記の「因幡の白兎」神話とは異なる白兎神話が伝わっている。神代、近隣の霊石山に天照大神が降臨し、どこからともなく現れた白兎の導きで、仮宮にふさわしい場所に着いたというもの。白兎は気が付いたら姿を消していたが、実はこの白兎こそ、天照大神の弟・月読神の化身だった。そこで、八頭町の中心地である郡家(こおげ)周辺数村では、月読神を道祖白兎大明神と称し、氏神として崇めたという。郡家という地名の通り、古代には朝廷の郡衙(ぐんが）があった場所で、その遺跡や白鳳時代の廃寺跡も発見されている。このあたりには今も白兎神社が数社点在しているが、その総鎮守であった神社は、明治の神社合祀で近隣の神社に一度合祀されている。一方立派であった社殿は惜しまれ、近くの成田山青龍寺に引き取られた。そのため、本堂内に社殿を安置し、その中に本尊を祀るという、特異な寺院になっている。近隣には、寺院の境内に残っている白兎神社もあり、当地の白兎信仰は、神仏習合、分離、神社合祀などの影響を強く受けている事が分かる。町内には隼神社という神社もあるが、神社に由来する隼の地名と、隼という駅もあり、その駅は鉄道とバイクと「萌え」が混在する、現代における「習合」が現在進行形で見られる場所である。白兎神話の町に「習合」文化の精髄を見る。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
