 日本最北端、空気の澄んだ日には樺太（サハリン）をも望む、北海道稚内市の宗谷岬。そのわずか数キロ南西に、宗谷の集落がある。ほぼ最北の集落と言って良いこの地は、古くから和人も入り、天明元年に建てられたという当地の宗谷厳島神社には、江戸時代の鳥居が残されている。この神社は、当然ながら和人が勧請したものであるが、アイヌの伝説も伝わっている。当地のアイヌのメノコ（娘）が、父の眼病の回復を祈って宗谷厳島神社でお百度参りを行い、弁財天の夢告により泉を探し当て、その泉の水で父が眼を洗うと、たちまち回復した。その泉の霊験は広く知られ、アイヌ、和人を問わず、水を求めて集まって来たという。その「カネクロサワの清水」は、今も海岸近くの国道脇に存在する。メノコの名前「オキミルク」は、アイヌ神話の英雄「オキクルミ」と酷似しており、それがルーツと見られる。「オキクルミ」は、人々に文化をもたらしたと言われており、現在もアイヌコタンとして知られる日高・平取町の二風谷には、彼が降臨したというハヨピラという崖がある。江戸時代、新井白石はこれを平泉を脱出した源義経と見て、近藤重蔵は義経の像を作らせ、アイヌに神として祀らせた。それはやがて、今もハヨピラに鎮座する義経神社となる。アイヌ神話と習合した、最北の神社の縁起を紐解く。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
