 朝鮮半島と九州の間に浮かぶ巨大な離島・対馬。南北約80kmの細長い島で、九州までは100km以上あるものの、韓国までは50km弱の距離にあり、天気が良ければ朝鮮半島を望む事が出来、夜には釜山の夜景が見られる事もある。その地理的な条件により、古代から朝廷に重視され、式内社が非常に高密度に存在する。島の中程に鎮座する阿麻氏留神社（あまてるじんじゃ）もその一つで、天日神命（アメノヒミタマノミコト）を祭神とするが、これは天照大神のルーツの一つと言われる。古史古伝には「アマテル」なる男神の太陽神を伝えるものもある。壱岐が月読神のルーツとされる「月信仰の島」であるのに対し、対馬は「太陽信仰の島」なのである。対馬の最南端・豆酘（つつ）の多久頭魂神社（たくづたまじんじゃ）も、式内社であるが、ここは中世、天童菩薩信仰の中心地として栄えた。天童菩薩は、天道法師とも呼ばれる、対馬独特の神仏習合の神であるが、「お天道様」に通ずる、太陽信仰である。対馬北部の海沿いには、やはり式内社の天神多久頭魂神社（てんじんたくづだまじんじゃ）が建ち、こちらも豆酘と並ぶ天道信仰の聖地である。石垣で囲まれた境内に社殿はなく、囲いの中に鏡が青空の下に祀られていて、沖縄の御嶽を彷彿とさせる。独特の太陽信仰を肌で感じた、「国境の島」高橋御山人若かりし日の滞在記。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
