 青森県弘前市、岩木山の麓に、鬼神社（きじんじゃ）なる神社が建つ。岩木山山頂奥宮に鎮まる大国主命の娘・高照姫神の霊験により、征夷大将軍・坂上田村麻呂が、山麓に社を建てたという由緒を持つ。神社にも関わらず、弘前藩主・津軽氏の家紋と同じ卍を神紋とし、境内に横になった一対の石の魚があるなど、不思議に満ちた神社であるが、何と言っても最大の謎は「おにがみさま」と呼んで尊んでいることである。昔、旱魃で村人が苦しんでいる時、大人（おおひと）と呼ばれる鬼が、山を切り開いて用水路を作ってくれ、以来、その鬼を祀っているとされる。当地の地名・鬼沢もその伝説に由来し、当神社の扁額の一部で「鬼」の字に角がないのも、鬼を崇め祀っているが故という。社殿の屋根下には、鍬、鎌、鋤といった鉄製の農具が、数多く奉納されているが、鬼が使ったかのように、巨大である。本殿には、実際に鬼が使ったとされる、千年前の鍬形が御神体として祀られているという。さらには、出所は定かではないが、本殿の地下に、永遠に錆びない巨大な刀が納められており、こうした高度な技術の持ち主であることが、隠された鬼の真相という話もある。日本各地の伝承を見ても、鬼は鉄と強く結びついており、平地の民が、山岳に住む異様な産鉄民の姿に、鬼を見たと言われる。津軽の神社から、鬼の神髄に迫る。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
