 島根半島の北、約50kmの沖に浮かぶ隠岐諸島。本土に近い知夫里島、中ノ島、西ノ島から成る島前、その沖の島後島一島のみの島後と、大きく二つの地域に分かれている。神話の国・出雲の沖に浮かぶだけあって、古い歴史を今に伝えており、島後の玉若酢命神社（たまわかすのみことじんじゃ）は、古代からの国造・億岐家（おきけ）が、代々宮司を務めている。ここには、現存唯一の、律令時代に朝廷から支給された駅鈴が、今も保管されている。日本海を挟んで新羅や渤海といった国々との交渉もあり、隠岐国一国を成した。このように、都からはるか遠くの離島とは言え、古代から栄えて来た隠岐であるが、平安時代以降は、小野篁始め、数多くの人々が流刑に処される地となった。特に中世、後鳥羽、後醍醐と、二帝が流されて来た事は特筆すべきである。後鳥羽上皇は、承久の乱に敗れた後、島前の中ノ島に流され、ここで十九年を過ごして崩御した。現在も行在所跡や御火葬塚が残り、隣接して隠岐神社が建っている。後醍醐天皇は、倒幕に失敗して流されたが、一年後に脱出し再び挙兵して幕府を滅ぼし、建武の新政を行った。隠岐滞在時の行在所は、島後の隠岐国分寺とも、島前西ノ島の黒木御所とも言われる。今、黒木御所跡には、黒木神社が建っている。配流の島々に、二人の「戦う天皇」の見果てぬ夢を見る。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
