 「日本三霊山」に数えられる霊峰・白山。奈良時代に泰澄が開いてより、神仏習合の霊場として栄え、山頂を目指す登山口となる「馬場」が、越前、加賀、美濃に開かれた。そのうちの越前馬場が、現在、福井県勝山市に鎮座する平泉寺白山神社である。平泉寺は、平安後期に比叡山の末寺となり、最盛期には僧坊六千坊、僧兵八千人を数えたという。それだけに、歴史を動かした人物達とも関わりが深く、奥州藤原氏の拠点・平泉の地名由来は平泉寺にあるともいい、中尊寺の境内には鎮守社として白山神社があり、秀衡の銘がある釣鐘も残っている。逃亡中の源義経や弁慶の伝承もあり、楠木正成の甥で平泉寺僧だった恵秀律師が建てたという、正成の墓塔もある。戦国時代には、朝倉氏と並んで越前の有力な勢力となったが、朝倉氏の滅亡後、朝倉景鏡を匿い、一向一揆によって焼き討ちに遭い衰亡する。桃山時代から江戸時代にかけて再興されたが、明治の神仏分離によって神社となり、僧侶達も還俗して神官となった。広大な境内は、往時の繁栄を今に伝え、土塁など「武装勢力」であった証も残っている。なお、福井県を代表する観光地・東尋坊は、元々平泉寺の僧侶の名と言われ、粗暴だった東尋坊は、仲間に謀られて断崖より突き落とされ、祟りを成したという。越前に栄えた「巨大宗教都市」跡の神社を訪ねる。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
