 九州と沖縄の中間に位置する奄美群島。最北端の喜界島でも、鹿児島から南に約400kmという僻遠の地にある。にも関わらず、本土との繋がりを示す伝説が多い。保元の乱で敗れて伊豆大島に流され、当地で討伐された源為朝は、南に逃れて沖縄へ至り、琉球王朝の祖となったというが、途中喜界島へ辿り着いたといい、為朝ゆかりの泉や神社が残る。平家失脚を狙う「鹿ケ谷の陰謀」が発覚し、俊寛が流された「鬼界ヶ島」は、喜界島の事ととも言われ、島にはその墓がある。平家の落人達も喜界島に逃れ、やがて奄美大島に根拠地を移したといい、喜界島にも奄美大島にもゆかりの神社がある。中世、北端の喜界島に至るまで琉球王朝に征服され、近世には薩摩藩の侵攻によりその直轄領となった奄美群島だが、古代には大和朝廷の勢力下にあったと見られ、平安時代には、暴れ回る奄美大島の民と見られる人々に対し、大宰府より喜界島に討伐の命を下した記録が残っている。そして喜界島の、平安から室町頃の城久遺跡群では、約五百棟もの建物跡や、製鉄の跡、日本本土や朝鮮半島、中国等多数の島外産陶磁器が発見されている。これは同時代の南西諸島の遺跡と比べ、群を抜く規模で、内容も極めて特異だ。その繁栄の背景には、宝飾品となる夜光貝の輸出があるという。知られざる古代・中世の「日本の南のボーダー」を探る。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
