 近年各地の神社が「パワースポット」として注目を浴び、それを目的として老若男女が参拝している。場所によっては、連日人が押し寄せ、縁結びや運気向上を願っている。あるいは「パワー」を得る為、境内の石に手を当てているような光景もまま見られる。こうした事は、近代以前からあり、神社信仰、文化の一側面ではある。しかし、それに偏重し、それをもって神社の主体のように思うのはいかがなものであろうか。神社に祀られる神々の多くは、過去実在した人物である。百社巡礼でも何度か取り上げた菅原道真公や安倍晴明公はもちろんの事、各地に祀られる氏族の祖神や開拓の祖神もそうであるし、天照大神ですらも実在の人間とする神道家もいる。そうした過去実在した人々は、皆、抜きん出た「パワー」に溢れた人々であり、だからこそ後世に語り継がれる実績を残し、神として祀られて来たのである。鬼や邪神とされた「まつろわぬ民」であっても、時代の趨勢によって敗者となっただけで、同じことである。彼らは皆、時代時代を精一杯生きて、何らかの大きな結果を出したのだ。今を生きる我々は、彼らを祀る神社でただ「パワー」を貰おうとするのではなく、彼らを畏怖し、目標として、自らも「パワー」溢れる存在となり、精一杯生きて行く必要があるのではなかろうか。神社における「パワー」の意義を再考。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
