 中国地方の中央、広島県北東部の盆地に位置する三次市には、江戸後期の神道家・平田篤胤も強い関心を持った「稲生物怪録」という怪異譚を記録した書物が伝わる。江戸中期、三次藩士の息子である稲生平太郎が、仲間との肝試しで嵐の中近所の山に登り、触れれば祟りがあるという石に木札を結び帰ってくる。すると、連日連夜、化物がやって来て平太郎を驚かすが、平太郎は動じる事がない。それが一ヶ月続いて、その最後にはついに魔王・山本五郎左衛門(さんもとごろうざえもん)が現れるが、それでも動じない平太郎に魔王は感嘆し、魔王の助力が得られる木槌を与えて去る、という話である。三次市には、その平太郎の屋敷跡や、「稲生物怪録」にも登場する山へ登る際の入口となった神社、木札を結んだ石、山麓の寺院などが今も残っている。また、平太郎は長じて武太夫と名乗り、三次藩が併合されたため広島へ移ったが、武太夫の名は広島でも轟いたようで、広島市内には武太夫を祭る神社があり、魔王より授かったという木槌も、市内の国前寺に伝わっている。また、四国・松山のお家騒動に関係した化け狸・隠神刑部（いぬがみぎょうぶ）を退治したという伝説が当地にあり、近隣にもその勇名が広く知られていた。「稲生物怪録」とは一体何だったのか？その舞台を訪ね、真相に迫る。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
