 滋賀県東部、鈴鹿山脈の西側の麓の旧永源寺町（現東近江市）の、三重県と境を接する最奥部に、木地師発祥の地であり、全国の木地師達の本拠地、元締の住む地があった。木地師とは、深山に分け入って木を伐り、ろくろで削って椀や盆などの木工品を作って、良材がなくなればまた移動するという、漂泊の民である。その木地師の元締めの集落が、永源寺の最奥部に蛭谷、君ヶ畑と二つある。皇位継承を巡る争いに敗れ、逃れてこの地に隠れ住んだ惟喬親王が、ろくろを発明し木地師の祖となったのが、その由来という。蛭谷には筒井神社があり、かつては「公文所」と呼ばれて、木地師の免状や通行手形を発行していた。木地師は全国の山の八合目以上の木を自由に伐って良く、通行も自由であった。境内にある資料館には、ろくろや椀、盆などの木工品の他、発行した免状や手形、全国の木地師を「氏子」として記録した戸籍の一種「駈帳」、時の為政者による許可状などがあり、古いところでは約千百年前、朱雀天皇の綸旨まである。君ヶ畑にはかつて惟喬親王が出家した金龍寺が建ち、「高松御所」と呼ばれ、筒井神社と同じく免状と手形を発行した。また、君ヶ畑にもゆかりの神社が建つ。深山に分け入り、全国を自由に往き来しつつも、一定程度組織化された木工職人達。ベールに包まれたその秘教的実態を探る。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
