 富山市郊外に鎮座する鵜坂神社は、二千年の昔、崇神天皇の頃、四道将軍の一人大彦命によって建てられたと伝わり、六国史や延喜式にも載る、「越の大社」と言われた古社である。越中国司時代に大伴家持も参拝し、近くの神通川で鵜飼を鑑賞、万葉集に歌も残している。行基が二十四堂伽藍を建立、白鳳期には真言宗鵜坂寺も建てられ、源義仲の挙兵により一時焼失するも、源頼朝が再建、明治の神仏分離まで神宮寺として栄えた。こうした長い歴史を持つ神社であるが、特筆すべきは、平安時代から行われていたという特殊神事「尻打祭」である。これは、女が一年の内に会った男の数を申告し、神主がその数だけ榊で女の尻を打つというものであった。元々は、正月に七草粥を炊いた薪で女性の尻を打つと健康な子が生まれるという、公家の遊びが伝わったものだったが、鎌倉時代には、既に女の性の乱れを戒める趣旨であったという。「尻打祭」は「日本五大奇祭」の一つに数えられ、平安歌人・源俊頼や、松尾芭蕉がこの神事を詠んでいる。しかし、この行事は近代社会には馴染みにくく、明治以降は雌馬で行われるようになり、第二次大戦以後は途絶えた。けれども、近代的観念と相容れない、「SM」すら彷彿とさせるこのような行事にこそ、神事の真髄が垣間見えるのである。奇祭の向こうに「近代的常識」の揺らぎを見る。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
