 東京より約千キロの南に浮かぶ、小笠原諸島。沖縄本島とほぼ同じ緯度で、サイパンまで約千三百キロの位置にあるこの島々は、東京都に属するが、六日に一度、東京より24時間以上かかる船でしか行くことの出来ない、海外よりも行くのが困難な「日本最大の秘境」である。島が出来てより一度も大陸と繋がったことのない「海洋島」であり、独自の進化を遂げた固有種が数多く、「東洋のガラパゴス」と呼ばれ、世界遺産にも指定されている。二千年近く前の石器も発見されてはいるが、幕末まで継続して人が住むことのない無人島であった。ここに最初に移民したのは、ハワイや欧米系の人々だったが、明治初期に日本領である事が確定し、彼らは日本に帰化した。そして当然日本からも数多くの移民がやって来て、言葉も文化も混ざり合った。さらに、戦後二十数年はアメリカの統治下となったため、その影響も強い。小笠原は、自然だけでなく、文化も「ガラパゴス」なのだ。しかし、日本であることに違いはない。現在小笠原で一般人が住むのは父島と母島のみだが、どちらにも神社がある。鬱蒼としたビロウのジャングルの杜の中に。2013年に初めてラジオ中継局が出来るというインフラ整備の遅れた島だけに、娯楽が少なく、神社での例祭は大変盛り上がるという。高橋御山人の「日本全市町村踏破」最難関踏破の記録。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
