 中尊寺金色堂を抱え、「黄金の国ジパング」の由来ともなった平泉。奥州藤原氏が開いた、京にも匹敵するこの一大都市の北を、衣川という北上川の支流が流れている。その合流点近くには、芭蕉の「奥の細道」でも有名な、源義経最後の地・衣川館（高館義経堂）があるが、古くはこの衣川こそが朝廷の勢力圏と蝦夷の勢力圏の境界であった。そして、流域に広がる旧衣川村（現奥州市）には、奥州藤原氏のルーツである、安倍氏累代の拠点・安倍館があったと伝えられる。元々朝廷の武士であった藤原経清は、安倍氏と婚姻関係を結び、朝廷から派遣された源氏と、安倍氏の側に立って前九年の役を戦ったが、最終的には滅ぼされる。が、数奇な運命を経て、後三年の役の末に奥羽の覇権を握ったのが、経清と安倍氏の娘との子であり、奥州藤原氏初代の清衡である。衣川は平泉のルーツなのだ。安倍館の近くには、安倍氏の守護神・アラハバキ神（其の二「宮城・秋田古代東北のまつろわぬ信仰」参照）を巨石に祀った神社が建ち、前九年の役の古戦場も残る。そこで、源義家は、戦いながら歌を詠み、安倍貞任はそれに返したという。捕縛され都に送られた安倍宗任も、蝦夷と小馬鹿にする貴族相手に歌を詠み、教養を示したという。命懸けの局面ですら詠まれる「和歌」とは一体何なのか。その真髄を読み解く驚天動地の芸術論！(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
