 平成二十七年九月、本対談の聞き役・盛池雄峰が居を構える、山梨県の東端・上野原市中心部の牛倉神社で、例祭が行われ、高橋御山人も参加した。例祭は、市内を巡る勇壮な神輿で知られるが、盛池雄峰の居住地の町内では、過疎化・高齢化もあって、神輿の担ぎ手が不足しており、毎年近隣の東京都八王子市から、多くの若者も含めた担ぎ手がやって来る。神輿というものは、比叡山延暦寺の僧兵や、日吉神社の神人などによる強訴に使われ、千年近い昔から「荒々しい」側面も強いが、当神社の神輿も少なからずそうである。そして、僧兵や神人の如く、担ぎ手にも「荒々しい」者が少なくない。多くの祭に付き物の、見るからに荒々しい「ヤンキー系」の人々もいれば、見た目はそうでなくとも、僧兵や神人の如く「社会の不穏分子」となり得る「自宅警備員」など、地元の人々からすれば異様な面々である。妖怪達の「百鬼夜行」のモデルは、このようなものに違いない。だが、そうした「異類」達が、必要とされ、活躍する。神社や祭というものは、古より、そのような社会の結節点としての役割があった。当神社の祭神たる牛頭天王も、外より来る「来訪神」だが、それは、こうした「異類」達の遠い先祖である。大都市八王子から数駅にして、過疎化の進む上野原、そこに新たなる神事として再浮上する、古き類型を見る。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
